Experience the thrill of driving through the sand dunes in a 4×4 vehicle, as it offers an exhilarating challenge. There are various ways to explore the Merzouga sand dunes, making for an unforgettable desert adventure.
Merzouga is surrounded by charming villages and stunning landscapes that can be explored with the help of 4×4 vehicles.
This 4×4 excursion in Merzouga begins at our location, leading you on an exhilarating drive through desert dunes interspersed with black volcanic rocks, taking you to several villages along a route renowned from the Paris Dakar Rally. You will also visit the seasonal lake of Merzouga.
The journey includes a stop at Khamlia village, where you can listen to some traditional Gnawa music (optional), socialize, and perhaps enjoy a cup of mint tea with the locals. Please note that supporting the Gnawa musicians is expected, either by purchasing a CD (approximately €10) or giving a tip; therefore, one of these options is necessary. Alternatively, you can bypass this and head straight to the lead mines in Mefes.
Mefes is a small, nearly deserted town located on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes, famous for its mineral mines, particularly iron, zinc, and lead. These mines have been in operation since the period of French colonization.
Afterward, we will continue our 4WD adventure to visit nomadic families living in Berber-style tents at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The final stop on this Merzouga 4×4 excursion will be the gardens in the village of Hassi Labied.
